Excited, I picked up a comb and started brushing my new doll’s hair. After she was nice and groomed, I moved a chair for her to sit on. I tried picking her up, but her stiff body fell back onto the table. I bent her at the waist, and once she was settled, I posed her arms and hands.

I fixed her tiny dress, arranged her hair, and manipulated her frozen, stiff arms around me. I finally had good company that couldn’t leave me.
